Naoki Yoshida has weekend plans on a June Friday night in Tokyo.
"Take it easy, rest up."
You might think standard. However, FF14 director Yoshida-san understands it may be his last chance to rest.
When he chats to BBC Newsbeat, Dawntrail, the latest MMORPG expansion, is a week away.
Square Enix said FF14 is the franchise's most successful game since a "disastrous" 2010 launch.
When Endwalker released in December 2021, servers struggled to keep up with demand due to the game's turnaround.
Not the only update since FF14's release. The industry and Japan's role have changed over the past decade.
Final Fantasy is a major cultural export for the country, and Square Enix wants to focus on the "global market" and its fans.
Dawntrail, which Yoshida-san considers "the starting point for the next 10 years of Final Fantasy 14", shows this approach.
Endwalker ended a decade-long tale arc, and Dawntrail begins another. The game gets a new look, character classes, and other additions.
The sunny, Latin America-inspired Tural region of FF14's planet hosts this "summer vacation".
Yoshida-san says his team wanted to try something different from Final Fantasy's European and East Asian influences.
He adds Central and South America has "huge area" and "a lot of history" to draw upon.
Square Enix has been criticized for aesthetic representation of foreign cultures, but its newest games address this.
Yoshida-san believes FF14 has always been a "global game" but thinks that social media has made "it's become easier for people to gather together and make their voices heard".
Although "there are risks involved" in depicting different civilizations, his team has taken the time "to learn about the culture, read the texts that are available".
"The world is diverse," he says.
"People have diverse ideals, religions, and relationships.
"And so it's really important, I feel, that we understand those points."
Final Fantasy games have traditionally blended Japanese and Western styles, but some say the franchise is having an identity crisis.
Yoshida-san tells Newsbeat Square Enix gets "50% to 80%" of its revenue from "overseas fans"—"really important to factor in when we are creating the game".
He believes a balance is possible.
"We were born and raised in Japan. He says we were raised with Japanese culture.
"We lack context and backdrop if we focus too much on international audiences.
"If we focus so much on the overseas audiences, then whatever we make wouldn't be successful."
Yoshida-san believes developers can't live in isolation.
"I think knowing the world is very important for us in our development moving forward," adds.
Another major Final Fantasy alteration occurred lately.
Square Enix makes games for various platforms but often signs exclusive arrangements to limit their console availability.
Japanese sales of PlayStation 5-only games Final Fantasy 16 (FF16) and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth have been disappointing.
After its debut, CEO Takashi Kiryu informed investors that the company will "aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy" to expand game availability.
Yoshida-san published the long-awaited Xbox version of FF14 this year, so he knows about exclusivity arguments.
It indicates a wider industry shift toward less game placement selection.
Figures indicate Japanese gamers prefer mobile devices or the Nintendo Switch, which recently became the country's top console.
"We want to have players regardless of whichever device they're playing on," he explains.
"We want them to play our game and all connect and join in and then play together in the same world."
Xbox CEO Phil Spencer "devoted a lot of his time" to FF14 on Xbox, says Yoshida-san.
"Thanks to his hard work, I'm super, super-glad we were able to see it to through to fruition," he adds.
"But of course, there are platforms which remain."
Yoshida-san answers quickly when asked which.
"Of course," he says. Naturally, Nintendo's platform.
"I'm sure people are waiting for the answer to that question."
Yoshida-san's main concern is delivering Dawntrail "the best possible launch" for now.
He expects to be busy after his weekend relaxation.
"I'm sure that it's going to be sleepless nights, we're going to be just eyes focused on the service status," he adds.
Players will remember Endwalker's rocky start, but Yoshida-san says he doesn't dwell on it.
"It's happened," he says. "That won't help us.
"Looking towards the future is our job."
Despite this, Yoshida-san advises remembering one thing.
The players who trusted the Final Fantasy 14 team and persevered with us.
"They really served as a source of motivation," says he.
We would not be here without them; they drove us.
"So keeping them in mind, we really just want to do our best for the Final Fantasy 14 community."
